Having to restrain from going out, staying closer to home,
home-owners have started getting more creative with their space. Here
are a few simple tips for getting the most out of your humble abode.
ESTABLISH BOUNDARIES FOR YOUR WORK SPACE, SEPARATE FROM YOUR LIVING SPACE
At a period of time when it feels as if the walls are closing in on us, it's imperative that you have space that you can live in, away from where you work. I know, I've had an office in my home, an office that I use several days a week, for a very long time. While I now have a separate office, it hasn't always been that way. But I have found from experience, that if I must live in the same place I work, it's difficult to turn my mind off. It also feels as if I never leave work. But having a space, even if it's another living space, that you call your "work place" can go a long way to helping you coexist in the same work/living space.
USE WALLS AND CEILINGS
Optimize your floor space by making your floor a clutter-free zone. Install shelves for books and other items over doorways and, if possible, in walls themselves. Use the space above your kitchen cabinets for unused appliances, empty boxes, and china sets, or simply purge your home of items that you believe you will no longer use. Take advantage of corners, which are underused and provide storage space if used properly, and in an organized way. But the important point here is that you give yourself room to walk and move around. This will seem as if you have also given yourself space to breathe!
BRIGHTEN UP YOUR SPACE(S)
The more light you let into a room, the more spacious it will appear! If you have access to natural light, take advantage of it with sheer window curtains. If not, be sure each room is well-lit with lamps, chandeliers, and sconces. When it comes to painting, darker shades tend to impose on space. Instead, opt for lighter, softer shades, using bright colors sparingly as accents. Add color to walls with your photography, or that of friends, to give your space another dimension and to brighten up your walls. Also, use mirrors to reflect light and also add dimension to your rooms.
USE MULTI-FUNCTIONAL FURNITURE
If your space just does not allow for a separate office with a desk, consider Instead a multi-purpose piece of furniture that can fold away and become something you can live on after hours. Instead of that big wooden coffee table and bold, angular couch, opt instead for chests, sleeper sofas, ottomans and benches with interior storage space, etc. Use collapsible or nested end tables that can be folded or tucked away when necessary. While, as a real estate broker, I prefer to see furniture not pushed all the way up against the walls, if your space is small, consider pushing your furniture to the extreme to allow for your living space to feel more open.
